The explanation for this practice, whose results are often incredibly accurate, rests on knowledge in disparate fields such as quantum physics, neurology, and psychology, supporting the theory that everything in the universe is interconnected.
I will give an historical overview of the practice and will discuss my recent video installations where I set out to explore how this practice may affect art and vice versa: Is it possible to Remote View works of art, and what are the implications of such experiment on the way in which we think about art? Is it possible to Remote View the future, and to describe works of art yet to be made? Can a geographical target be transformed into art, and what will it look like following the mediation of a Remote Viewer's consciousness?
Tue: 15.00-17.00: Dark Heart of Codeness, a .walk
A .walk into computational darkness, Tuesday the second of August 2010. [15.00-17.00] at the entrance of the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park.
For a while I've been interested in the repurposing of common device such as CD players, VHS players, TVs even as sensitive detection or measurement devices for certain psyschogeophysical parameters. This research parallels and investigates similar work carried out by EVP/ITC researchers such as Juergenson and Raudive. I was planning to workshop the modificiation of some devices during the summit week - the constructed apparatus could then be used on field trips - but after thinking on ideas connected to sites of execution (how a site can be rendered executable) I thought that it would also be interesting to select a place for investigation and to collect apparatus for modification only from that site, that it could itself suggest its own means of inquiry.
At the same time, I made some simple experiments with jam-jar magnetometers, and came up with a simple modification of a published design, documented here:
http://www.1010.co.uk/org/geophysics.html#sec-2.1.1
In some ways these device are iconic for psychogeophysics, integrating solar flares, magnetic storms and local geological state, with traffic movement and micro-urban activities. These simple designs can easily be constructed in a short workshop and used for evening observations with small laser pointers.
I'm also interested in making long-term studies across the week, using my own scrying apparatus, and perhaps also the inscription device I developed very recently which allows for the superimposition of several surfaces:
Due to ionization of the atmosphere it is often possible (or not) to propagate radio signal over significant distances. Ionization level is dependant on the Sun activity periods, as well as believed to differ significantly in populated areas (London). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Cycle_24 Curvature of the atmosphere can be used as a waveguide for radio signal propagation, where resulting distance is dependant on the initial angle of the signal, thus the base of the triangle ABC ( A - transmission point, B - reflection point in the ionosphere, C - destination) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skywave
the idea is to try to establish CB 27MHz link in the city of London. Using different methods and techniques first voice communication can be established. simple modulated bidirectional data-link must also be possible archive using audio playback/record devices and later analysis on a computer.
Using the famous book series of Marcel Minnaert: “The physics of the outdoors” we will awake and exercise our observation skills. Light, sound and movement. Proposed format: talk + walk. In the talk we will present the recent history of “observation”, from 1830 to 1945 and present some examples. Then we will try to replicate some “observation experiments” in the outdoors. Also: some modern observations that Minnaert can not have known about, like chaos theory and emergence. Possibly also: how never to be bored again by analyzing plane symmetries in the urban space. Details are being worked out right now. Possible duration: 2 - 3 hours
Using a commercial electronics amplifier kit, clothes hangers, tape and any kind of acoustic mirror surface (for example a chinese wok) we may try to build a parabolic microphone to play with in the outdoors. then we could combine this with sound analysis software. I'm building a prototype right now and will have to see if this is translatable to London. People would have to pay a little for the components … I will bring 6 kits. Possible duration: 2 - 3 hours
Temperature, wind and humidity conditions vary greatly in urban space. There is a lot of interesting research in this area. How to make this visible and turn it into a workshop? I'm still researching this … most probably it will be merged with the “observation” workshop.
This workshop consists of building your own hydrophone/underwater transducer with cheap materials. Later we'll try some experiments in the sink to see if everything is water-proof. The idea is to implement an underwater transmission protocol to send messages from one side of the Thames to the other side. Apart from that, the hydrophones can also be used for long-term field recordings in rivers, lakes and ponds and combined with other measuring devices (like magnetometer, ELF, …)
psychGPS - psychogeophysic_al game between sights of execution during the psychogeophysical summit in London 2010
point of departure: 2 walking groups, 2 android mobile phones, 1 psychGPS application.
The GPS system has opened our bird's eye view by the exact determination of time and space near the earth's surface. Once for all our region of shelter has shrunk. Navigation has shifted from an observation of the stars into an admiration of satellites. The psychGPS walking group is trying to expose the appearance of GPS shadowing/ghosting within the city of London. One group is trying to evade any accurate acquisition process performed by a GPS-device. By using the city architecture, such as underground passages, roofed areas and narrow streets, one can confuse a GPS reading device in its calculation process. Thus, your position will be highly inaccurate and you'll sneak through the streets like a wild animal in an urban setting; hiding from satellites to shadow. The multipath effect is caused by reflection of satellite signals (radio waves) on objects and surfaces since the reflected signal takes more time to reach the receiver than the direct signal. While the 2nd group is embracing the sky and trying to step out of the electromagnetic shadow effect caused by tall buildings, narrow streets, water and reflective surfaces, they'll most likely be found walking in the middle of the street, in parks or on other elevations. During those walks satellites, signal-to-noise ratios and “offline” time as well as the route will be recorded for later analysis. Each group will be equipped with a printed city map, a compass and instructions.
Using cheap materials - make-up mirrors and lenses from China - cardboard boxes from the supermarket - glue and paper - we will design and build a camera obscura useful for drawing the landscape without any drawing training and talent. We will try to find “drawable” urban spaces and if all works out well we can make an exhibit of the cameras and pictures. - I will bring 8 mirrors and lenses. The rest will have to be scavenged “in situ”. Possible duration: 2-3 hours.

thoughtographic exposure of photographic material throughout a so called magnetic fluidum that every object or being is inhabited with. – In reference to Franz Mesmer. Short preparational workshop with experiments, laboratory set-up, discussing different approaches and methods to expose the alleged magnetic fluidum of selected environments onto the sensitive material.
collective or independent exposure walk is proposed:
a: distribution of sealed photographic materials at selected places to be later in the week recollected and chemically processed;
b: photographic material stays attached to the body throughout the walk
c: telepathic exposure
d: collecting substances and materials during the walks to be later directly exposed onto photographic paper and processed

A will-o'-the-wisp or ignis fatuus (Latin, from ignis, “fire” + fatuus, “foolish”), also called will-o’-wisp, corpse candle, jack-o’-lantern, friar’s lantern, hinkypunk, and wisp, is a ghostly light sometimes seen at night or twilight over bogs, swamps, and marshes. It resembles a flickering lamp and is sometimes said to recede if approached. Much folklore surrounds the phenomenon.
Origin
The oxidation of phosphine and methane, produced by organic decay, can cause glowing light. Since phosphine spontaneously ignites on contact with the oxygen in air, only small quantities of it would be needed to ignite the much more abundant methane to create ephemeral fires. The Italian chemists Luigi Garlaschelli and Paolo Boschetti have replicated the lights by adding some chemicals to gases from rotting compounds. They argue that the combustion can be sustained at lower temperatures than those found in traditional fires. Taken together, these findings seem to explain two of the more puzzling aspects of the Will o’the wisp, its spontaneous, transient nature and low temperature “flame” that doesn’t seem to burn items close by.

FAQ:
- Is this a psychogeophysical phenomenon?
If the presence of will-o'-the-wisp can be related to the geophysical-chemical status of a certain piece of urban or suburban land, their appearance modifies the space where it is perceived, generating a psycho-stratum of belief and interpretation which, subsequently, layers over the place itself, mapping another history.
# Instrument of detection:
- one aluminum tube
- 2 bottles (glass or plastic)
- two rubber corks
- 1 thermometer (optional)
- one pump
